WHY WE NEED EACH OTHER

40 Days of Community – Part 1                             February 6, 2005

Romans 12:5 …so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

1.     I NEED OTHERS TO WALK WITH ME.

1 John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

Genesis 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

·            Community is God’s answer to loneliness.

1 Corinthians 14:26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.

Ephesians 4:16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

1 Peter 4:9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

2.     I NEED OTHERS TO WORK WITH ME.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:

·            Community is God’s answer to fatigue.

Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

3.     I NEED OTHERS TO WATCH OUT FOR ME.

Philippians 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

·            Community is God’s answer to defeat.

Ecclesiastes 4:10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!

4.      I NEED OTHERS TO WAIT AND WEEP WITH ME.

1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble…

1 Corinthians 12:26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

·            Community is God’s answer to despair.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn…

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

5.     I NEED OTHERS TO WITNESS WITH ME.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Philippians 1:27b Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel

·            God’s answer to fear is community.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline.
