| If I am a good person, will I go to heaven? |
|
Asking this question is a lot like asking, “if I make the water hot, will it boil?”. One hundred degrees is not hot enough to boil water, you have to get it all the way up to 212. Likewise, if you want to go to heaven by being good, the bible says we have to be perfect. It is an all or nothing deal. We have either made no mistakes in our entire life, or we have made a mistake. I think we’d all agree that at some point in our lives we’ve done something morally wrong, something we simply should not have done. The term given to our moral imperfection is sin. The word sin simply means to miss the mark. The mark that we continue to miss is moral perfection. So, when we mess up and miss that mark of moral perfection, we sin; and, no one is perfect, so by definition we’re all sinners…even Billy Graham, Mother Theresa, and that guy down the street that seems to be such a nice guy. Now the problem with sin is that it separates us from God, like the ocean separates America from Europe. The separation is so vast that jumping it would be like jumping the Atlantic. But, here’s the good news. God loves us so much that he sent his one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross and be resurrected on the third day. Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection bridged the ocean between sinful man and God. Now that a bridge has been built, we need only walk across that bridge to be with God. To walk across the bridge, commit your life to loving and serving Jesus Christ because of the hard work he has done in building the bridge. If you do, you are guaranteed to be with God in heaven the moment you pass away. Do you want to commit your life to Jesus Christ and know you will go to heaven when you die? If so, simply tell him through prayer that you know you are a sinner and that you want to be forgiven. Tell God that you believe Jesus Christ died for your sin, that he rose again, and that you want to serve him in gratitude for the rest of your life. God will respond by coming to live within you so you may experience life like you never imagined! We’d love to hear about your decision!
